out and about

This girl's dress was made out of 3form (it was a fashion show)! Pretty cool. Thanks, friends (3form, Gunlocke, and Wolf Gordon), for hosting this event (back in September)... and, of course, it was fun having the 3 Musketeers back together again.

5th year

I've lived in New York for just short of 3 1/2 years. However, I moved here for the first time in the summer of 2007 and started then what has continued as a serious tradition. In October of 2007, I came back to NYC to visit Pamela and LA (who were stationed here permanently by that time, since they had already graduated college) and we did a spontaneous and impromptu Central Park photo shoot during our day in the park. The leaves were changing and the park was absolutely glorious. And every year since then, the three of us have marked a date on our calendars weeks ahead to make sure this fall tradition doesn't die out.

What seems like an event that just started last year has reached a milestone. Today is the 5th Annual Fall Central Park Photo Shoot! I'm headed out now to carry on the tradition (with Katherine joining this year!) and will be back with some wonderful fall photos.

If you're in the neighborhood and looking for something to do, you should stop by! Dewey's is on 5th Avenue between 25th and 26th Streets. Hope to see you there!

weekend, & other

Whew. I feel like I am finally *somewhat* starting to catch my breath again. The last two weeks have been a complete whirlwind...and, now it's October. I don't know where the time went, but it is certainly gone. I got a new job, I traveled home to Alabama, I started my new job, I celebrated surprise birthdays and regular birthdays and I've done a lot of other stuff in between, too. I'm glad that I'll hopefully be getting a breather soon, but somehow fall always seems to be the busiest season of all. And I'm learning to embrace that...

This was the beautiful sky in New York today. I can certainly get used to that.

looking for something to do next Monday night?

If you're in the New York area next Monday September 26th, I have the perfect thing for you! My South Africa mission team is hosting a wine & dessert tasting fundraiser to support the orphanages in South Africa that we'll be working with. We are hoping to provide a generous donation to these less fortunate while we are there in November. If you're looking for a good cause, drop by our event!

brooklyn farmacy

One of the stops on our adventure for Katherine's birthday celebration was a soda fountain called Brooklyn Farmacy. It was a relatively new restaurant that was made to feel old-fashioned with "soda jerks" who prepared homemade soda, delicious sundaes and everything else you can imagine that would be at a soda fountain. Even with the commute, I would definitely go back! Thanks for choosing such a fun birthday celebration spot, K!

the last weekend of summer

I can't believe it's that time again. Summer is over. What?! I wish I was spending the weekend with my floaties jumping into a pool, but I'll be here instead (with lots of fun things planned, I should add). I don't know where the time has gone or why it's going by so quickly, but it's going by like a speeding bullet. Here's to enjoying one more weekend of my favorite season of all!

cafe grumpy

On Wednesday night, my friend Addie and I met (for the first time!) at a local coffee shop: Cafe Grumpy. She had been there once before and recommended it, so I tried it out. It was so cute: in an adorable, quiet part of Chelsea, there was enough room inside to actually walk around and sit comfortably (sounds simple, but often that is a luxury at coffee shops in NYC), and they made this beautiful design in my cappuccino. They also had an incredibly high-tech system for paying which I found to be amazing. It was a tiny credit card slider on an iPad where they swiped my card, and then I "signed a receipt" with my finger on the screen, entered my phone number and they texted my receipt to me! If you're in the area, you should give it a try!

preparing for Irene

I just got this photo in an email from a friend with the subject line 'water on our table':

We are preparing for the worst, and hoping for the best... New York City, you never cease to amaze me with what you throw my way. I've been through my fair share of "hurricane weather" in Alabama, but never in a city with 8 million other people, while working in a high-rise building with glass everywhere and being completely reliant on public transportation. We'll see how this works out. We shall see soon enough...ο»Ώ

street art

I guess I never get to work early enough to see this kind of thing. Today as I was crossing the street to go into my building, I saw that the gate to the normally hopping Houndstooth Pub was covered with this!

I especially love the Mister Softee ice cream truck painted on it! And, boy, is it tough to get a picture in NYC with no one in it! I tried, but not much luck.

rise and shine

I started my day out bright and early this morning when I left my apartment at 7 AM to head down to Clinton Street Bakery for breakfast. I've been wanting to try it out since I moved here 3 years ago, but I was always scared off by the rumors of how early the line formed on the weekend for brunch. Brendan suggested going down this morning before work and getting there when it opened at 8 AM (we actually got there a little after 7:30), and it was well-worth the early morning trek. I got the Southern Breakfast that you can see in the photo. And still made it work by 9:15!
