take me to denver!

Tonight I'm hopping on a plane to see my favorite Denver-ites for the weekend: The Kyles! This trip has been almost 4 years in the making with the original plan being to visit the Kyles when they lived in Phoenix for three years. And now, they're in Denver! Back in October 2009 (which feels like a lifetime ago), Caylen came and visited NYC for the weekend. It was a blast and I can't wait for a west coast reunion this time around. Get ready Cay, I'm bringing my camera!!

Pictures to come when I return!

happy birthday LA!

Today is LeeAnne's birthday! And we had a great time this weekend celebrating her at a new brunch spot  (new to me, anyway) in Nolita called BarBossa. It was a brazilian cuisine restaurant and was absolutely delicious! There were so many great options on the menu that I took a full 30+ minutes to decide, but that's nothing new...

happy, happy birthday LA (...and see ya later, January)!!

soup & football

I would have much rather been celebrating in the same way I did last year for the college football National Championship game, but in the absence of that, I still celebrated. I made my go-to winter soup, Cowboy Stew, and (sorta) watched (mostly talked during...) the game with fun people! I always love an occasion to pull out this easy-peasy & delicious soup recipe. And what's better than football and soup, even if it isn't Auburn?

christmas baking party

I know, I know Christmas is over! But I never got around to blogging about this brilliant party idea. The week before Christmas my friend Kasey hosted a "Christmas Baking Party" in Brooklyn. She had all of the guests (it was a group of 7) submit their favorite Christmas dessert recipe to her in advance. She looked over the recipes, combined ingredients,  and then distributed ingredients among everyone who was attending. In total, everyone only ended up bringing a 2-3 ingredients each (since there was a lot of overlap), and we baked seven wonderful and different delights! We baked all together at Kasey's apartment, and at the end of the night we each took home a container with a variety of everyone's treats. Not only do I love to bake, but getting to take home everyone's favorite holiday dessert...well, it took the cake! This party was a terrific idea and would be fun at other times of year, too.

a reunion

First, I want to apologize for one thing: my lack of posts about my trip to South Africa. I promise, updates are in the works. But sifting through 5,000 pictures (yes, 5,000) and almost as many stories and memories is difficult work during the holidays, or any time really. I have a lot of thoughts, but getting them into short, semi-interesting posts is another story. They're coming though. If you're interested in my trip, please don't give up on me, they'll be up shortly (hopefully).

Secondly, on that same note, last Monday night our Cape Town team had a debrief and follow-up meeting. It had only been two weeks since we had seen each other, but after spending 10 solid days together, it felt like two weeks too long. It was refreshing and exciting to hear everyone's thoughts after taking some time to process them. We sang some songs we learned in Africa and drank orange Fanta (although, it tastes different in America). Most of all, we just cherished and enjoyed the time we spent together. And planned our next time to get together. And tried to pretend like we were still in Cape Town, rather than New York (everyone checking their cell phones was a dead giveaway, though). It was a glorious reunion, and made me so thankful to have embarked on such a journey with these 15 people.

In the meantime, if you want to read about the trip from the perspective of some of my team members, you can read here on Bethany's blog or here on Amy's blog.

ann-marie & jon's wedding

This past weekend, in a picture-perfect setting, my friends Ann-Marie and Jon tied the knot! They were married in a beautiful chapel on quintessential 5th Avenue and 55th Street with their reception in a spectacular building overlooking Rockefeller Center and the Rockefeller Christmas tree. I could go on and on about how beautiful the whole wedding and ceremony was (and how sweet it was to be a part of it), but I'll stick to letting the pictures be worth a thousand words.

I took as many pictures by this tree as I possibly could...

This photo was taken at 10:45 at night. And the streets are still jam packed!

My friend Kristen from Auburn and Ann-Marie are first cousins. What a small world, indeed!

weekend 2 update

I decided that no matter how behind I am, I am determined the post pictures from the last several weekends. Not only does it allow me to look at the pictures again, it also makes me feel like the weekends weren't actually that long ago.

My little Rose petals came to visit the first weekend of October! We counted, and in the three and a half years I've lived here, Rose has been to visit four times! And I still think that's four times too little. We had such a fun and relaxing weekend...and we didn't even leave my neighborhood. We spent a lot of time in Central Park and walking, thanks to the gorgeous, perfect weather. I think RL's feet were happy to be back in Alabama, though.

Alice's Tea Cup for my favorite brunch spot.

Saturday night picnic in the park: perfect! Chirping Chicken entree + Levain dessert.

Sunday Central Park relaxation.

Sunday night dinner at Carmine's. I can't think of anything better!

[you can check out RL's recap of the weekend right here. Of course, she posted hers in a timely manner so you may have already seen it!]

Thanks again Rose for coming to visit!! I'm excitedly waiting for the next time!

5th year

I've lived in New York for just short of 3 1/2 years. However, I moved here for the first time in the summer of 2007 and started then what has continued as a serious tradition. In October of 2007, I came back to NYC to visit Pamela and LA (who were stationed here permanently by that time, since they had already graduated college) and we did a spontaneous and impromptu Central Park photo shoot during our day in the park. The leaves were changing and the park was absolutely glorious. And every year since then, the three of us have marked a date on our calendars weeks ahead to make sure this fall tradition doesn't die out.

What seems like an event that just started last year has reached a milestone. Today is the 5th Annual Fall Central Park Photo Shoot! I'm headed out now to carry on the tradition (with Katherine joining this year!) and will be back with some wonderful fall photos.

birthday celebrations: kat

As I mentioned on Friday, we celebrated for Katherine's birthday. And we celebrated big. We had a full night in Brooklyn with delicious pizza and the best sundaes you've ever tasted at an old-fashioned soda fountain.

And this is just the beginning of the pictures! Robyn recently got a new camera that she so generously let me play with...those pics are coming soon!

Happy 26 birthday Katarina!

happy birthday(s)

Today I'm wishing the happiest of birthdays to my favorite set of quadruplets, my roommate Katherine and her 3 womb-mates! (You can also check out her sister Quinn's blog here.) We're going out to celebrate for dinner with pizza and dessert in Brooklyn, and I'm only wishing that the three other siblings could join, too. Maybe next year we'll get them all here in the Big Apple for the occasion.

Also, it's my older brother Brent's birthday today!

[It must be a good day for birthdays. I think so.]

cafe grumpy

On Wednesday night, my friend Addie and I met (for the first time!) at a local coffee shop: Cafe Grumpy. She had been there once before and recommended it, so I tried it out. It was so cute: in an adorable, quiet part of Chelsea, there was enough room inside to actually walk around and sit comfortably (sounds simple, but often that is a luxury at coffee shops in NYC), and they made this beautiful design in my cappuccino. They also had an incredibly high-tech system for paying which I found to be amazing. It was a tiny credit card slider on an iPad where they swiped my card, and then I "signed a receipt" with my finger on the screen, entered my phone number and they texted my receipt to me! If you're in the area, you should give it a try!
