blog

on friends & shoplifting

I never thought I'd have a blog post quite like this, but there's a first time for everything, I suppose.

Meanwhile, my mom used to tell me she did crazy things because she had four kids and she had lost her mind during the process. Either I inherited a crazy brain gene (without the four kids) or New York has made me crazy. Because somewhere along the way, I lost my mind.

I had been so excited about this event for weeks. My friend Jenny was going to be speaking and signing her newly released book, Dancing Through It, at the Upper West Side Barnes & Noble on Monday night. I corralled my fellow ballet-loving friends and we went to hear the discussion.

Even though I already had one signed book from Jenny, I was waiting in line for another for my friend Maggie who had to leave the event a little early. There was a table stacked high with Jenny's books on display to grab as we snaked through the line, and when I finally reached Jenny and her sharpie, she stealthily handed me another book she had gifted to pass along to my mom. As we happily waited to get a picture with the author herself, without thinking, I shoved the books into my purse. After our photos and goodbyes, my friends and I gathered our things, made our way downstairs and began parting ways.

And, without hesitation or a moment's pause we walked straight through the doors. Never thinking twice. Shoplifted books in hand!

It didn't dawn on me what happened until I was on the crosstown bus back to my apartment. When I realized, panic ensued. I wildly texted my friends—who had done the same thing!—and asked if they had paid for their books, even though I knew none of us had.

While the next half hour involved a lot of worse case scenarios in my mind—including jail time and public ridicule, the mistake was easily solved. I called Barnes & Noble before they closed, explained what happened, and asked to pay for the book over the phone. Despite the one employee's annoyed tone after my confession of what I had done, the debt is now settled.

But, sheesh, I never thought I'd have that offense on my record! Hopefully it's the last, ever...

the perfect valentines

But not for the romantic reasons.

I always love a good handwritten & homemade note, especially on Valentine's Day. (I'd be lying if I said I don't love celebrating the pink and redlove-inspired holiday.) This year, I celebrated with two pretty special cards from two of my sweetest friends, and an even more special gift from my dear friend, Jenny: an advance copy of her book, Dancing Through Itthat is set to be released this coming Thursday. I couldn't even wait until I got home last night to start reading; I opened it the moment I reached the subway platform to wait for the next train.

And now I'm not feeling so bad about the piled-up 10+ inches of snow outside after all. You'll know where to find me on this long holiday weekend—curled up & reading!

a book to read

If you're looking for a good summer read, this should be on the top of your list: Rules of Civility.

It's a beautifully written novel about New York in the 1930s. The story follows two girls—who live as roommates—on their journey of making life work in this big city (but with much more drama and interest, of course, than just watching how they "make it work"). It's funny to see how all these years later, some things never change in the Big Apple. And never will,  I suppose.

(...Keep this on the quiet, and I'm not making any promises, but I heard the author speak last fall and he said there may be a movie deal in the works for this book! All fingers crossed.)

book club: harry potter menu

As I mentioned earlier, we had the second meeting for my Gospel in Fiction book club this week. It was a lot of fun and the menu made it even better. As you can see above in the photo we had (clockwise from L to R): golden snitches, cauldron cakes, quidditch players pie, magic wands (in the background), butterbeer (I finally found a delicious recipe, which I will share in another post) and Deathly Hallows cookies. The best part is, we had even more than what is pictured here! We also had: chocolate covered worms, pumpkin ravioli, fish & chips, and Mrs. Weasley's rock cakes.

Can you even imagine a better menu?! Oh...yea, and the book discussion was great, too!

fiction book club, 2nd edition

Remember last month when I mentioned I was in a new fiction book club? We're meeting for the second time tomorrow night and guess what the series that we'll be discussing is this month? Yep: Harry Potter! Don't try to imagine how excited I am because you can't possibly.

I'm trying to decide if I should wear my Hermione costume, or not...

And of course it wouldn't be a Harry Potter party without Potter snacks, so we'll have those too. In fact, we have a whole Potter-esque menu planned. I'll report back on that!

i wish i could go!

I got this in my email yesterday (thanks Anthropologie!) and almost jumped for joy! I wish it fell on a different night so I could attend. I'm dying to read this book (my friend just got it as a wedding gift at her bridal shower this past weekend) and would love to hear what the founding editor of Domino has to say. If you're in New York on Wednesday night, will you please go in my place?

finally.

I finished The Help! It took me long enough, but I'm finally done and I'm going to see the movie. Since I don't watch much tv, I hadn't even see the trailer preview, and once I started the book I didn't let myself watch it until I was done (mostly because I wanted to keep the characters as they were in my mind's eye until I was done and didn't want to be influenced by the actresses who played them in the movie). I watched the trailer for the first time now and I'm even more excited to see the movie on Sunday!!!

the help

I've heard so many great things about this book. And, I love a book with a movie that follows. I've been meaning to start for a while, but since the movie came out last night, I guess my window is growing shorter. Here goes, I'm starting tonight... I'll let you know what I think. (If you've already read it, let me know what you think!)
