fette sau

Fette Sau is the most delicious bbq spot in Brooklyn, and possibly all of Manhattan as well. We ventured out to Williamsburg last night with our friends Pamela and John. I had heard a lot of good things about this spot from my boss at work, and that got me excited to try it out. It's the type of spot where you go in and tell the people at the meat counter how many pounds of meat you want - no 'bbq plate platters with 2 sides' available here. I think we racked up about 2 pounds of meat plus some delicious sides and a key lime pie for dessert from this diamond in the rough, conveniently served at Fette Sau. It was worth every bit of time spent on the L train to get there!

(the aftermath!)

pies n thighs

Tonight I'm heading over to Brooklyn to try out LeeAnne's church and also this restaurant that I've been dying to try: Pies N Thighs. What could sound more appetizing than that?! I've been scouring the menu for at least a week trying to decide what I want to try. I still haven't decided and think it will come to a game-time decision...luckily, I probably can't go wrong with anything I choose! There's nothing like a good southern meal in the summertime, even if it's in New York.

sprinkles in manhattan

...finally!!!

Yesterday my sweet coworker Sandi surprised me in the office with Sprinkles cupcakes after her afternoon meeting. I've heard about Sprinkles from my friends on the west coast (ahem, Caylen) but have never had them for myself. Then last week, Kyo was raving about how delicious they were. And, of course, I can't let a new cupcake place come into town without giving it at least a try! They were delicious and completely held up to their rep. Sandi was snapping pics and emailing them to me the whole time she was in the store, now I just have to make it over to see for myself!

next stop:

I had heard about the opening of Doughnut Plant a few months ago, but hadn't made the effort to go yet. Last week after a delicious, authentic Chinese dinner at Grand Sichuan with some friends, I happened past the Doughnut Plant on my walk to the subway. I can't believe I haven't been here yet! Beautiful doughnut pillows fill the walls. And as you can barely see here, a beautiful ceramic mosaic doughnut-designed slab makes up the bench seating. It's small, but it looks worth the trip.

too close for comfort

I made a scary discovery today - there is a Baked by Melissa only one block over from my office! They sell cupcakes the size of a quarter, which are way more deadly than they sound because I could eat 10 of them in about 10 seconds. My favorite flavor is tye die because it looks so pretty but tastes so normal. The flavor is vanilla cake with vanilla icing, but looks very rainbow-esque. Now, my self-discipline comes into play...

game changer

Thanks to my well-informed roommate, Katherine, I made a life-changing discovery tonight: there is a 16 Handles only a few short blocks from my apartment. It's NY's version of Yogurt Mountain and I felt very obligated to check it out considering my allegiance to Yogurt Mtn. So I did... and it was soooooooo good!

brunch is my fave

Before I moved to New York, I didn't do brunch very often. But here, it's a must. And I've come to really love the in-between-ness of the meal, where you can get the best of both worlds. Friday afternoon, LA and I set a place for our brunch date this morning: Tipsy Parson.

I've been meaning to try this place out for a while. I just did a refresher on the menu to see what I wanted to have, and I quite literally can't hold in my excitement! Everything looks so delicious, though, I'm not sure how I'll ever choose...I better start thinking now.

my march madness picks

For the first time in my life, I decided to submit a bracket for the NCAA March Madness basketball tournament.  My company was doing a free pool and encouraged those of us to play who knew less-than-nothing about college basketball, so I gave it a shot. However, I think my bracket is also shot. Maybe the first night? But then I found my true bracket-calling when I saw this on LeeAnne's tweet today! This is the kind of bracket that is right up my alley. What do you think? Do I have a winner?

meatloaf smeatloaf double-beatloaf, i hate meatloaf

Not this meatloaf, though. A few weeks ago Brendan and I went to dinner at a new spot called Eatery - new to me, not to him. It was my third week at my new job and I wanted to relax with some good home-cookin', comfort food after work (...that I hadn't cooked myself). I voted for one spot, Brendan voted for another, and we ended up here.

Then I saw this menu item:

White Cheddar Meatloaf: with Beer Battered Onion Rings, Buttermilk Mashed Potatoes and White Cheddar Fondue

I've never been much of a fan of meatloaf, but the waiter convinced me that it was the best thing on the menu, so I gave it a shot. He also said that it had recently been ranked in the Top 10 comfort foods in New York City last fall. Even better. (He must have overheard my conversation with Brendan telling him that I wanted "comfort food") So I tried it... and I haven't looked back since!

like fries?

Go here, in the East Village: Pommes Frites.

All they serve is fries. Authentic Belgian fries. With over 25 sauces to dip them in. We tried Especial, Rosemary Garlic, Wasabi, and Sweet Mango Chutney sauces, and they were all delicious. Me, Maggie, Kyo and Tim went here to celebrate Kyo and Tim's engagement last Saturday morning (along with a sandwich at a Vietnamese sandwich shop and cold skin noodles at an authentic Chinese restaurant, all within the hour). I'm glad to have found such a place. I'm sure I'll be back, only next time with a much less exciting reason, perhaps...
